Bring elegance and durability together with our premium Alpinus granite countertops—a top choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and high-traffic areas. With stunning patterns and a robust finish, these countertops offer both aesthetic appeal and performance built to last. But what truly sets them apart is the attention to detail during production, particularly a critical technique developed over decades: leaving a 1mm backing during processing.
Over 20 years ago, when I first began producing Alpinus granite countertops, I followed the process requirement to leave a 1mm platform on the back of each slab. At the time, it was simply part of factory discipline—no one explained why it was done or the purpose behind it. This is still the case today in many stone production facilities. While the rule is enforced, many workers don't understand its significance, believing it's just a leadership directive, something to be followed without question.
But over the years, through hands-on practice and deep reflection, I have come to fully understand the real purpose and value behind leaving 1mm on the back of stone products—and I’ve shared this knowledge with many professionals in the industry. Now, this once-mysterious rule has a solid theoretical foundation that helps new and experienced workers alike see not just how, but why it matters.
The so-called "back-and-left 1" means leaving a small 1mm platform during the backside processing of any granite, including Alpinus. This seemingly minor detail has major implications for the quality, longevity, and safety of the final product.
Yet many Alpinus granite countertop manufacturers skip this step or don’t enforce it properly. As shown in Figure 1, even when the 1mm backing is technically added, most employees don’t understand its purpose. They do it only because they're told to—not because they understand how it prevents edge chipping, improves secondary bonding, and ensures better joint integrity.
Without clear understanding, employees may neglect the process altogether if not supervised. But this lack of 1mm support can lead to edge collapses, poor glue joints, and long-term durability issues during transport, installation, and use.
By leaving a 1mm backing:
- You prevent fragile edge collapses during fabrication and secondary bonding.
- You reduce glue joint failures, especially at corners and seams.
- You minimize damage during transport caused by slab-to-slab contact.
- You strengthen employee craftsmanship by helping them understand the “why” behind the “how.”
This small yet essential step ensures that every Alpinus granite countertop meets the highest standards of quality and resilience, supported by decades of experience and theory-based production practices.
