From Complexity to Simplicity: Minimalism with Terrazzo Countertops

Minimalist design often embodies the philosophy that "less is more," a principle famously championed by modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the early 20th century. This concept finds its ultimate expression in the spatial design of Baolong Xuhui City in Huzhou, where simplicity is elevated to an art form.

The Challenge of Simplicity

Creating minimalist spaces is deceptively complex. The design process involves reducing decoration, using volume manipulation, and blending materials and lines to achieve a rich spatial experience. Through the strategic use of terrazzo countertops, the space transforms into a harmonious balance of form and function.

Integrating Wood and Stone

The design juxtaposes natural materials, allowing wood and stone to grow together and shaping a pure spatial temperament. Using terrazzo blocks, the design achieves dynamic visual effects, with light streaming through the spaces between blocks. This interplay of light and shadow highlights terrazzo's gradients, enhancing the textures and shapes within the space.

Subtraction as a Design Strategy

The WJID design team employs a "subtraction strategy," removing unnecessary decorative elements to focus on texture and volume. By layering and sculpting the terrazzo, they create a sense of depth and movement. Certain sections of the terrazzo countertops are cut or hollowed out, softening the material's mass while blending it seamlessly with chipped marble and wooden panels. This approach fosters a comfortable, advanced indoor atmosphere that resonates with timeless sophistication.

Geometry and Abstraction

Architecture and interior design share a profound ability to transcend time through their high degree of abstraction and geometric representation of space. Designers leverage geometric compositions to infuse the structure with a sense of eternal continuity.

For example, the obtuse angles at the ceiling's wooden panel joints form triangular spaces, introducing oblique geometry that creates tension and movement. These intersecting lines extend the visual experience, adding layers of depth and dynamism to the space.
