Dashiwo Town: The Birthplace of Beijing’s White Marble Jade
From the Yunlong Royal Road in the Palace of Supreme Harmony to the marble balustrades of the Temple of Heaven, from the reliefs of the Monument to the People's Heroes to the seated statue of Chairman Mao in his Memorial Hall, all these grand structures share a common element—white marble jade from Dashiwo Town, Fangshan, located southwest of Beijing.
This week, a reporter visited Dashiwo, a town that has built its legacy on white marble mining and carving, to uncover its historical and cultural significance.
Sculpting a Marble Lion: An 80-Day Masterpiece
Dashiwo Town, 70 kilometers from Beijing, is easily accessible via the Jingzhang Highway. As one enters Fangshan, the first sign of Dashiwo’s industry is the stone factories and carving workshops, scattered along the roadside.
Turning west at the Yunju Temple intersection, a long stretch of stone factories lines the road leading into Dashiwo Town. Here, countless large and small carving workshops display their artistry—stone lions, Buddha statues, fairies, and animal sculptures—standing in neat rows.
The town is home to nearly 100 white marble jade carving factories, concentrated on both sides of the road. The artisans here craft intricate sculptures, and a single marble lion takes an expert carver approximately 80 days to complete.
A White Marble Palace in the Heart of Dashiwo
At the center of Dashiwo Town, directly across from the town government offices, stands the "White Marble Stone Carving Culture and Art Palace"—a striking structure built entirely from white marble jade. This grand building forms part of the China Stone Sculpture Art Park, a cultural hub dedicated to preserving and promoting Dashiwo’s centuries-old stone carving heritage.
In the near future, Dashiwo Stone Sculpture Art Park is set to host a prestigious exhibition, celebrating the town’s rich stone carving traditions. Currently, the exhibition design plan is under discussion, promising to further elevate Dashiwo’s reputation as China’s premier white marble jade center.
