White Jade Marble Carving Declared Intangible Heritage
Expert Evaluation and Cultural Recognition
Recently, six renowned experts, including Song Zhaolin and Hua Jueming (members of the National Civil Protection Engineering Expert Committee) and Zhao Shu (Chairman of the Beijing People's Association), participated in an expert demonstration meeting on traditional stone mining, transportation, processing, and white jade marble carving techniques in Dashiwo Town, Fangshan District.
After thorough evaluation, the experts proposed renaming the "Dashiwo Stone Works in Fangshan District" to "Beijing Dashiwo Stone Works Cultural Village" to better reflect its historical and cultural significance.
Ultimately, the experts unanimously agreed to nominate the project as a representative work of Beijing-level intangible cultural heritage and a national intangible cultural heritage. If approved, this recognition will significantly contribute to the preservation of Dashiwo’s marble resources and ensure the continuation of its exquisite stone carving craftsmanship.
Historical Significance of White Jade Marble
Massive White Marble Extraction in Extreme Conditions
Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, two major national projects have utilized Dashiwo’s white marble:
- The Monument to the People's Heroes – Constructed using marble slabs from Dashiwo.
- The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall (1977) – Featuring a seated statue of Chairman Mao, appearing as though it was carved from solid white marble.
Li Zhijun, Minister of Propaganda in Dashiwo Town, revealed a remarkable story about the construction of Chairman Mao’s Memorial Hall.
In the early winter of 1976, the Fangshan County Party Committee received an urgent request from the General Office of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee:
- They required 1,200 cubic meters of high-quality white marble from Dashiwo.
- The marble was essential for the seated statue of Chairman Mao, 360 railing sets, 720 pillars, and exterior panels.
- The deadline was only five months—an immense challenge for a task that typically required over a year.
Despite freezing temperatures of -20°C, over 10,000 workers mobilized to mine, cut, and transport the massive marble blocks, ensuring the project’s completion on time. This incredible feat highlights the historical and cultural value of Dashiwo’s white jade marble, further strengthening its case for intangible heritage recognition.
