The Strength and Significance of White and Black Granite

White and black granite countertops are formed under immense pressure in underground rock formations, giving them a hard texture. Each square centimeter of granite can withstand between 1,000 and 2,300 kg of pressure, making it an incredibly durable material.

Physical Properties of Granite

Granite has a porosity of only 1%, meaning its water permeability is very low, and it boasts strong erosion resistance. Due to these properties, karst caves are rarely found in granite-rich regions.

Historical and Architectural Importance

Because of its strength and durability, granite has been used as a building material since ancient times. More than 4,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians quarried massive granite blocks from the southern Aswan region to construct obelisks and pyramids.

Western architecture has also relied on granite, with notable examples like the Colosseum, which has stood the test of time for thousands of years. In China, although stone construction is less common in traditional homes, significant monuments such as the Monument to the People's Heroes are built using white and black granite.

Formation and Geological Features

Granite becomes exposed when the overlying rock is weathered and stripped away as the Earth's crust moves upward. This process often occurs in orogenic belts (mountain-forming regions).

Faults and joints within granite formations are heavily shaped by glaciers and flowing water, leading to the creation of towering peaks. A prime example is Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, located at the southern end of the Andes Mountains. This region features breathtaking granite peaks rising about 3,000 meters above sea level. Among them, the iconic "Three Torres del Paine" stand side by side, offering one of the world's most spectacular sunset views.

Granite Mountains Around the World

In China, more than 40 famous mountains, including Huangshan, Taishan, Huashan, Jiuhuashan, and Sanqingshan, are composed of granite. Huangshan alone has over 70 peaks exceeding 1,000 meters in height, with numerous waterfalls carved by flowing water. Rapid geological uplift and strong erosion have created dramatic cliffs and steep rock faces.

Huashan, in particular, is renowned for its extreme cliffs and perilous paths. The "Long Sky Plank Road", built along a 90-degree cliff, is often called the "Ladder of the Brave." Some visitors wait in line for hours just to experience this thrilling challenge—many finding their legs trembling at the first glance down the sheer drop.
