Formation & Differences Between Marble and Granite

General Definition

  • Broad Sense:
    • Marble: Any stone with texture.
    • Granite: Any stone with spots.
  • Narrow Sense:
    • "Marble" originally referred to stone from Dali, Yunnan.
    • Today, most marble in China does not come from Dali.

Geological Differences

Granite (Igneous Rock)

  • Type: Igneous rock (acid crystalline plutonic rock).
  • Formation:
    • Formed from magma or volcanic lava that has cooled & solidified.
    • The amount of silica (SiO₂) and feldspar content determine the stone’s properties.
  • Composition:
    • Silica content: 65%–75%
    • Primary minerals:
      • Feldspar
      • Quartz
      • Mica
  • Structure:
    • Hard & dense
    • Granular texture (due to crystallization of quartz & feldspar).

Marble (Metamorphic Rock)

  • Type: Metamorphic rock.
  • Formation:
    • Created by high temperature & pressure inside the Earth's crust.
    • The structure, texture, and composition of the original rock undergo qualitative changes.
  • Composition:
    • Main minerals:
      • Calcite
      • Limestone
      • Serpentine
      • Dolomite
    • Calcium carbonate content: Over 50%
  • Properties:
    • Softer than granite.
    • Easily weathered & corroded by:
      • Carbon dioxide
      • Carbides
      • Moisture
    • Loses luster quickly due to exposure.

Surface Treatment & Market Considerations

  • Natural stone has micro-pores, making it prone to stains.
  • Processing plants apply surface treatments to enhance durability.
  • Artificially Processed Stone:
    • Many stones sold today have artificial coloring.
    • After 6 months to 1 year, they fade & reveal their true appearance.
    • Example: Many "large green" stones on the market are dyed, not naturally green.
