Basic Material Property Test for Sandstone Wall Panels

The properties of sandstone and travertine can vary significantly depending on the quarry. Therefore, before selecting a mining site for sandstone wall panels, basic material property tests must be conducted.

1. Flexural Test

• Mining Site Determination:
  • Test samples must represent different mining points within the quarry.
  • Minimum test samples: 20 for initial site selection, 10 per batch for ongoing mining.
• Testing Conditions:
  • Conduct both dry and saturated flexural strength tests separately.
  • Dry flexural strength: Determines the basic material properties.
  • Saturated flexural strength: Evaluates the stone’s sensitivity to water.
  • Use pure stone specimens (without reinforcement or composite layers).

2. Water Absorption Test

• Test both untreated sandstone wall panels and those with waterproof treatment.
• Requirement: Water absorption rate ≤ 1% after waterproofing.

3. Freeze-Thaw Coefficient Test

• The freeze-thaw coefficient measures the stone’s durability in cold climates.
• Definition: Ratio of flexural strength after freeze-thaw cycles to initial flexural strength.
• This test is mandatory for areas experiencing sub-zero temperatures.

4. Basic Panel Requirements

• Only materials that pass all basic tests and meet the conditions outlined in Section 2 can be processed into sandstone wall panels for curtain wall engineering.
