Basic Conditions for Using Sandstone Wall Coping and Travertine in Curtain Walls

Sandstone wall coping and travertine have significantly weaker material properties compared to granite, making them prone to safety issues. Therefore, owners and designers must carefully evaluate their suitability before selecting them as curtain wall panels.

Minimum Requirements for Sandstone Wall Coping in Curtain Walls

1. Bending Strength Test

Each batch of sandstone wall coping used in curtain walls must undergo a bending strength test. The results must meet the following standards:

• For curtain walls up to 80m high:
  • Average test value ≥ 5 N/mm²
  • Minimum test value ≥ 4 N/mm²
• For curtain walls exceeding 80m:
  • Average test value ≥ 6 N/mm²
  • Minimum test value ≥ 4.5 N/mm²
• Directional Force Considerations:
  • Unidirectional force slabs: Must meet the above values in the primary force direction.
  • Bidirectional force slabs: Must meet the above values in both force directions.

2. Material Composition Requirements

• The stone must not contain weak stripes or veins.
• Travertine holes should not be too dense.
  • Maximum hole diameter: 3mm
  • No transparent holes allowed.

3. Water Absorption Limits

• Before waterproofing: ≤ 6%
• After waterproofing treatment: ≤ 1%

4. Freeze-Thaw Durability

• Minimum freeze-thaw coefficient:
  • ≥ 0.8 (recommended)
  • ≥ 0.6 (absolute minimum)

5. Structural Integrity

• No cracks or breaks in stone slabs.
• Broken sandstone wall coping slabs must not be glued to the curtain wall.
