China's Major Sandstone Tile Producing Regions
China is one of the three largest sandstone tile-producing countries in the world, with vast sandstone mineral resources. Due to its extensive territory and complex geological environment, China has a diverse range of sandstone varieties. However, the majority of sandstone mining activity is concentrated in Sichuan, Yunnan, and Shandong, making them the three major sandstone production areas. Other provinces, such as Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, and Shaanxi, also have sandstone deposits, but their influence in the market remains limited.
Let’s take a closer look at the three major sandstone-producing regions:
1. Sichuan Sandstone Tiles
Sichuan sandstone belongs to mud sandstone, characterized by fine grains and a soft texture, making it highly suitable for building decoration, particularly for carved stone applications.
Due to Sichuan's complex geological conditions, the province boasts a rich variety of sandstone, with colors including red, green, gray, white, black, purple, yellow, and cyan. This makes it the most color-diverse sandstone source in China.
However, there are certain limitations:
- Sichuan sandstone is relatively soft, which affects its durability.
- The province’s transportation infrastructure is less developed, making logistics a challenge.
- Mining methods are outdated, restricting large-scale extraction.
As a result, Sichuan sandstone is generally supplied in slabs under 1m. Some mining areas use circular saws to cut larger slabs, but the high damage rate makes production costly.
Interestingly, there are reports of a granite-hard sandstone in Sichuan, but it remains largely unverified. Some harder varieties of Sichuan sandstone can also withstand high-temperature firing, expanding their usability in construction and decoration.
