Red Sandstone Stone Driveway
Red sandstone stone driveway refers to sedimentary rocks such as argillaceous or sandy shale, which are typically red, crimson, or brown due to their iron-rich oxide content.
- After excavation, exposure to air, sunlight, and rain accelerates disintegration, making it susceptible to weathering.
1. Basic Theory of Red Sandstone Embankment
1.1 Classification of Red Sandstone
Red sandstone is classified into three types based on its water disintegration properties:
- Class I: Disintegrates in water.
- Class II: Does not strongly disintegrate or only slightly disintegrates in water.
- Class III: Does not disintegrate in water, has high strength and good water stability.
1.2 Main Characteristics of Red Sandstone Stone Driveway
Slight Volume Increase:
- Expansion rate: 1–4%.
- Softens and loses strength rapidly when exposed to water.
High Water Absorption:
- Even with adequate compaction, porosity remains high (~0.1–0.3).
Low Viscosity & Bonding Performance:
- Easily loosens.
- Difficult to obtain block samples for compaction testing.
- Leads to poor roadbed integrity and irreversible strength loss.
Easily Weathers:
- Prone to rapid deterioration.
Uneven Settlement:
- Softens and weathers upon water exposure.
- Increases the risk of large, uneven settlement in roadbeds.
