Project Introduction

A health and leisure center in Hangzhou is situated in the Zhijiang National Tourism Scenic Area. The project covers a total building area of 15,258.6 square meters, with three floors (one basement and two above ground).

✅ Construction Timeline:

• Started: December 24, 2004
• Quality Goals:
  • Ensure the "West Lake Cup"
  • Strive for the "Qianjiang Cup"

✅ Exterior Wall Decoration:

• Utilized imported Spanish sandstone stepping pavers with dry hanging construction.
• Covering an area of over 5,000 square meters.

Issue: Yellowing of Sandstone Stepping Pavers

🔹 The owner requested six-sided protection for the stone to prevent pollution.
🔹 However, insufficient understanding of stone protectant performance led to unexpected problems.

🚩 Key Events:
1️⃣ Initial Protection & Yellowing:

• A specific brand of sealant was used.
• After one month, severe yellowing appeared on approximately 2,500 square meters of installed stone (Figure 1).

2️⃣ Sealant Replacement & Continued Yellowing:

• The initial sealant was replaced with a different brand.
• Result: Yellowing persisted and worsened over time.
• Some severely yellowed stones were replaced (Figure 2).
• However, yellowing continued to spread across a larger area (Figure 3).

3️⃣ Construction Halt & Failed Solutions:

• Due to ongoing yellowing issues, the owner made personnel adjustments in the project team.
• Construction was halted in September 2006.
• Multiple negotiations & cleaning tests were conducted, but none provided satisfactory results.
• The owner considered replacing all installed sandstone, but this would cause:
  • Significant financial loss
  • Delays in the leisure resort center’s opening and operations

📌 Current Status:
When the author was invited for an on-site inspection, construction had already been suspended for over two months.
