1. Sand & Its Granular Composition

Sand is a granular substance composed of minerals and rock fragments. Sedimentologists classify sand into three categories based on particle size:

• Coarse sand: 2.0 - 0.5mm
• Medium sand: 0.5 - 0.25mm
• Fine sand: 0.25 - 0.0625mm

When sand undergoes lithification, it forms sandstone paving white.

2. Classification of Sandstone Paving White

Sandstone paving white is classified based on the miscellaneous base content:

• Pure sandstone: Contains less than 15% miscellaneous base.
• Miscellaneous sandstone: Contains more than 15% miscellaneous base.

• Typically originates from quartz-rich parent rocks like granite, granite gneiss, and metamorphic quartzite.
• It undergoes strong chemical weathering and long-distance transportation before deposition in coastal or shallow marine environments.
