Protecting Sandstone Flooring: Methods & Considerations
The Importance of Protection
Dirt on sandstone flooring not only affects its appearance but also contains harmful chemicals that can degrade its quality. To prevent pollution, water penetration, and discoloration, as well as to make cleaning easier, applying a protective agent is recommended.
Types of Protective Agents
There are various protective agents on the market, each designed for different types of stone. When choosing a protective agent, consider:
✔ Adhesion to the stone (some may cause foaming)
✔ Potential chemical reactions with the stone
✔ Compatibility with the surrounding climate
Based on the solvent used, protective agents fall into three categories:
1️⃣ Acrylic-based emulsion (Water-based)
2️⃣ Silicon-based
3️⃣ Solvent-based (Chemical-based)
Among these, water-based protective agents have the least impact on color, while silicon-based and solvent-based agents may enhance color more visibly.
Indoor Sandstone Protection
Sandstone is a granular solid with high breathability, meaning it needs a certain degree of "breathing freedom" to maintain its integrity.
✅ Indoor environments have stable humidity levels and are less affected by extreme weather conditions (cold, heat, or moisture). This means indoor sandstone is less prone to scaling, making it compatible with most protective agents.
⚠ Reapplication is necessary after a certain period, similar to paint maintenance.
