Ancient buildings often used sandstone floor tiles as a load-bearing material, but with the development and improvement of construction technology, with the emergence of reinforced concrete structures and steel structures, load-bearing stone has become less common.
However, some architects still choose to use stone structures, as seen in the Livadia house in Greece, where the architects used locally sourced stone for the walls and exposed the interior spaces, showing a combination of natural materials and technology. Some architects also choose to combine stone with new structures, using stone as a characteristic element.
As in this project, the architects used a steel structure to create a skin in front of the original stone wall. Stone walls The use of sandstone floor tiles as a contrasting element is a particularly interesting design tool in residential renovation projects.
Combining features with modern technology, a piece of history is restored and repaired.
The Richaud Factory Residence, designed by Richaud Arquitectura, highlights ancient architectural traditions, as well as a new wall treatment of natural sandstone floor tiles that contrasts with the smooth plaster paint surface. A bathroom sink carved from natural sandstone floor tile is also a standout feature.
