A recent video of a slate dining table bursting has gone viral on a video platform.
In the video, a boy does not eat well, and his father knocks on the table. Instantly, the slate tabletop bursts.
Slate, as a relatively new material in the building materials industry, is widely recognized for its high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. However, it has a major drawback—its edges are prone to bursting.
Many people wonder: if slate can exceed 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, why does it still break? The reason lies in the difference between overall hardness and edge durability. While the entire slate sheet is strong, the edges, especially where the material has been cut, are more vulnerable. Uneven pressure or a concentrated impact, such as a heavy object colliding with the edge, can cause the material to chip or break.
This edge fragility makes slate particularly susceptible to damage during transportation and installation. Unlike natural marble, which can be repaired and polished to restore its surface, slate lacks this flexibility. Even minor edge damage on slate is difficult to fix, making it more prone to visible defects over time.
