Some polished travertine with higher radioactivity detected are likely to be artificial marbles. Artificial marble is made of natural marble and sometimes crushed granite as the filler, cement, gypsum and unsaturated polyester resin as the binder, and it is made by stirring, forming, grinding and polishing. This kind of polished travertine may contain high and harmful gases. The radioactivity of artificial marble depends on the amount of granite filler and its own radioactivity and the radioactivity of cement gypsum, while the harmful gas mainly depends on the amount of volatile substances such as formaldehyde and benzene contained in the binder. Mr. Wu explained that gray granite is generally not a big problem, while red granite is generally more radioactive. After the cement is fired, a certain amount of ash is added, and the ash of some inferior coal has higher radioactivity. Some gypsum is processed from the residue left after phosphoric acid and phosphate fertilizer are produced from phosphorite. Phosphorite is generally more radioactive. If it is not handled well, gypsum will also have higher radioactivity.
According to reports, there are currently some basic or ultrabasic rocks on the market. The former is gray-black or gray-green, and the latter is jet-black or green-black, which can easily be mistaken for polished travertine. The radioactivity of these rocks is also very low, but the "small structures" that may exist in them can easily cause fracture or damage. Mr. Wu introduced a simple method to check the authenticity of polished travertine: using dilute hydrochloric acid test, if it is calcite, it will foam violently; dolomite, although it will foam, but weak; and basic rock or super For basic rocks, this phenomenon does not occur.
Ji Yuan Stone suggests that whether you are buying natural polished travertine or artificial stone, you must obtain a certificate of radioactivity and harmful gas indicators from the merchant, or ask a professional inspection agency for testing. Nuclear Science and Technology Union Environmental Technology Development Center provides this kind of testing service specifically for citizens.
