Current Status of Oriental White Marble Mosaic Paving and Installation

The paving method for marble mosaic today is similar to traditional mosaic paving. However, there are key differences, particularly in the bonding strength between the back net and the base layer. The particles are not well connected to the primer, and the paving process does not enhance the overall particle strength.

Paving Procedure

1. Surface Preparation – Remove debris from the base layer and sprinkle water to moisten the mortar.
2. Applying Adhesive – Spread an even layer of glue-containing mortar onto the base.
3. Mosaic Placement – Place the entire panel of mosaics onto the adhesive. Use an iron plate to gently pat the surface for even installation.
4. Curing & Grouting – After the cement cures, fill the 2cm mosaic gaps with glue-based grout. However, for smaller 1cm mosaics, the fine gaps make reinforcement difficult, and regular grout cannot fully fill them.

Even when gaps are filled in small-particle mosaics, color inconsistencies can occur, leading to an uneven appearance. Compared to traditional paving methods, the process remains the same, but the final effect can differ significantly, as seen in Figure 4.

Challenges & Structural Weaknesses

The small-particle oriental white marble mosaic has inherent flaws in both its material structure and construction method. This often results in:

• Weak strength after installation.
• Poor decorative effects due to irregular gaps and uneven particle surfaces.

Reasons for These Issues

1. Weak Bonding Between Back Net and Base Adhesive

• The oil-based adhesive on the back net is incompatible with the water-based base adhesive, which can lead to hollowing and detachment.

2. Limited Connection Between Particles and Primer

• The back mesh grid is mostly sealed by adhesive, meaning the particles are only attached to the back net and not properly bonded to the primer.
• Without proper reinforcement, the surrounding areas remain fragile, making it prone to loosening and detachment (see Figure 4).

Conclusion

While the installation of oriental white marble mosaic follows traditional paving methods, its structural limitations require improved bonding techniques to ensure durability and aesthetic consistency.
