Deviation Standards for Diagonal and Verticality of Oversized Boards

1. Understanding the Standard Deviation for Large-Specification Boards

Recently, a friend asked:

When the length (or height) of a board exceeds 2500mm, what is the standard deviation for the diagonal? Is there a national standard for this?

The response:

  • There are national standards, but they are generalized and do not provide detailed specifications for oversized boards.
  • The application of these standards depends on specific project requirements.

When asked about the client’s tolerance requirement, the friend stated:

Within 1mm.

While this is a high precision requirement, it is achievable if the bridge cutting machine used has high accuracy.

2. National Standards for Angle Tolerance

According to GB/T 19766-2005 5.4 Angle Tolerance Standard:

  • For first-class honey marble tiles (L > 400mm) → Allowable tolerance: 0.4mm
  • For second-class honey marble tiles (L > 400mm) → Allowable tolerance: 0.5mm

However, for L > 1000mm or even longer, there is no specified tolerance limit.

According to the "Technical Regulations for Building Decoration Indoor Honey Marble Tile Engineering":

  • For Class A boards (L > 400mm) → Allowable tolerance: 0.4mm
  • For Class B boards (L > 400mm) → Allowable tolerance: 0.6mm

Again, for L > 1000mm, no clear tolerance is specified.

3. The Issue with Undefined Maximum Limits

  • Comparing these two standards, it is evident that they only specify tolerances for L > 400mm without defining an upper limit for L.
  • This ambiguity may mislead clients, making them assume the same standard applies regardless of size.

4. Deviation Standards for Diagonal Lines

  • Currently, there are no national standards specifically addressing diagonal deviation for oversized boards.
  • From a practical perspective, as L increases, the allowable tolerance for angles should also increase.
  • Basic mathematical principles and technical diagrams can help explain this adjustment logically.
