The Aesthetic Contrast of MAS: A Stone Sculpture in Antwerp
When looking at the photos, the most striking aspect of MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) is the strong contrast between the virtual and the real. However, what stands out even more is its facade—composed of grey sandstone flagstone.
This impressive structure is covered with large, hand-cut red Indian sandstone slabs, which extend across the tower’s facade, floor, walls, and ceiling. As a result, MAS resembles a meticulously crafted stone sculpture.
Modern Technology Meets Traditional Craftsmanship
A fascinating detail is the paving sequence of the sandstone on the facade. Utilizing modern technology, a computer-controlled system arranges the four colors of slate into a precise pattern. Skilled workers then assemble them piece by piece in an orderly fashion.
While this technique may seem innovative, it is not entirely new. We have previously explored similar cases in our stone series articles—feel free to revisit them if you’re interested!
The Decorative Touch: A Metallic "Coat"
To soften the rigid volume of the tower, the designers incorporated metal decorative patterns onto the facade. These patterns, resembling hands, serve as both ornamentation and a nod to Antwerp’s logo. The design continues inside the building, where the metallic elements appear like medals, enhancing the visual narrative of MAS.
A Bold Statement in Color
In an era where black, white, and grey dominate architectural trends, MAS stands out with its bold red hue. However, its red is not overwhelming or cheap—it is elegant, carrying the warmth and enthusiasm of Antwerp as it embraces the world.
Interestingly, all of this has little to do with the grey sandstone flagstone chosen by the designer.
