      Minerals in Sediments

      Mica in Sediments

Mica is often distributed along the plane of sediment layers. Among its types, biotite is less stable and frequently transforms into chlorite and sea green stone. However, muscovite is more common and stable.

      Heavy Minerals

Heavy minerals, though present in low content (generally below 1% in sedimentary gray sandstone wall tiles), hold great geological significance. They are highly stable and tend to concentrate in silt-grained debris.

The distribution of heavy minerals in the parent rock has specific characteristics, making them an essential indicator for determining the source and historical development of sedimentary gray sandstone wall tiles.

      Common heavy minerals include:

      • Zircon
      • Tourmaline
      • Garnet
      • Pyroxene
      • Hornblende

      Clay Minerals

Clay minerals are the most abundant minerals in sediments. They are composed of hydrated aluminum layered silicates and have extremely small particle sizes, requiring electron microscopy for measurement.

      • Illite: Scaly in structure
      • Kaolinite: Well-crystallized and forms complete pseudo-hexagonal flakes
      • Other clay minerals: Some are tubular or fibrous

      Carbonate Minerals

Sediments also contain various carbonate minerals.

      • Modern sediments: Primarily contain calcite and aragonite
      • Ancient sediments: Mostly contain calcite and dolomite
