Gravestone granite stone continues to be a preferred choice for memorials due to its enduring strength, aesthetic appeal, and long-lasting performance. At Purchase Stones, we offer globally sourced granite that meets the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship.
In recent years, the gravestone granite stone market has seen significant fluctuations. According to the Shanghai Stone Circulation Industry Association, the freight rate for imported granite surged from $54/ton in June 2003 to $120/ton by February 2004, with prices expected to hit $150/ton by June. Despite strong demand, the market has experienced a “prices but no market” phenomenon, primarily due to logistical and political challenges at key exporting ports.
At the Port of Vitoria, Brazil, four dominant shipping companies formed a union to leverage local policies, effectively monopolizing port operations and barring international freight companies from operating freely. A similar pattern has emerged in South Africa, India, and other regions, resulting in massive backlogs—fewer than 30,000 tons of granite were shipped to China in Jan-Feb 2004, compared to 300,000 tons in the same period the previous year.
The impact has been felt across domestic markets in Xiamen, Shuitou, and Fujian, where prices for imported granite blocks rose by 200 yuan per ton starting in March. By this time, the CIF price in Shanghai—plus processing and transportation—had reached 355 yuan per square meter, pushing the industry into cost-price inversion and reducing available inventories.
Despite rising costs, leading stone industry giants like Dongcheng, Kangli, Gaoshi, Global, Shanghai Taxing, and Huizhong held a combined inventory of 500,000 tons by the end of 2003, temporarily stabilizing prices through early 2004. But dwindling supplies have made price increases unavoidable in the near term.
To address these challenges, industry experts recommend strengthened negotiations between domestic stone associations and international trade partners, and greater intervention by national freight giants like COSCO to maintain supply chain stability and price control.
The Shanghai Stone Circulation Industry Association has already established a real-time inventory and market tracking system with major granite importers to monitor trends and prevent market volatility.
