In the last century, two problems led to an increase in the demand for granite headstones for graves in the UK. In 1900, stone tombstones were still only a consumer product of the upper-middle class in Britain. Today, granite headstones for graves have entered low-income ordinary households due to their not easy to move, convenient to visit and repair the graves of the deceased, and these low-income families have become the main consumers of stone tombstones. Such changes have caused the price of stone tombstones to drop to a worrying level, stimulating the import of cheap granite headstones for graves. Among them, the import of black granite from India has exceeded that of self-produced granite headstones for graves in the UK.

Another important change is that more and more people are using cremation. Although this point is still controversial, it is followed by the decline of British religious tradition. At present, less than 2% of the population of 59.2 million people participate in regular religious activities. Until 1932, less than 1% of people used cremation. By 1968, the proportion of cremation used had accounted for 50%, and this number continued to rise, and it stabilized in 1992. Last year, 630,000 people who died in England, Wales and Scotland were cremated.

Until recently, the ashes of the deceased were either sown or buried without marking. Inevitably, this hit the British granite headstones for graves industry and many stonemasonry factories closed down. The National Association of Tombstone Masons (NAMM), which represents this industry, has 400 members and has done a lot in the past few years to recommend the use of tombstones in cemeteries and crematoriums to burial institutions. Eventually, the usage of tombstones increased significantly. About 15% of people in cremation use granite headstones for graves, and this proportion will continue to grow.
