Characteristics of Main Minerals in French Pattern Sandstone
1. Quartz
- Appearance: Colorless, transparent, granular, sub-rhomboid to sub-round, clean surface.
- Optical Properties: Under a polarizing microscope (political and religious polarizer), it exhibits first-grade grayish-white interference colors.
- Origin-Specific Features:
- Plutonic Magmatic Quartz: Contains gas-liquid inclusions or small secondary mineral inclusions with a high degree of self-proliferation.
- Metamorphic Quartz: Shows wavy extinction and visible needle-like or long-columnar inclusions of characteristic metamorphic minerals.
- Extruded Rock Quartz: Exhibits cracked lines, bay-like dissolution edges, and sometimes muddy, garden-like, or authigenic enlarged edges.
2. Feldspar in Clastic Rocks
There are three types of feldspar particles found in clastic rocks:
① Plagioclase
- Shape: Irregular, angular to sub-angular.
- Surface: Turbid due to sericitization under single polarized light.
- Color: Gray, with visible cleavage.
- Optical Properties:
- Under orthogonal light, it exhibits fine and dense twin crystal patterns (albite—longer French pattern sandstone type).
- A wider twin crystal pattern indicates anorthite type.
② Orthoclase
- Appearance: Colorless to reddish, plate-like or columnar.
- Cleavage: One set of clear cleavage planes.
- Secondary Features: Sometimes develops stripes along cleavage directions due to secondary changes, making the surface appear turbid.
- Optical Properties:
- First-level gray interference color under orthogonal light.
- Common simple twin crystals.
③ Microcline (Micro Plagioclase)
- Appearance: Colorless, transparent, broad-plate or columnar.
- Surface Features: Some areas appear turbid due to kaolinization along cleavage directions.
- Optical Properties: Characteristic lattice twin crystals under cross-polarized light.
