Terrazzo Maintenance & Restoration Guide
Over time, terrazzo flooring may experience wear and damage. Proper maintenance ensures longevity and aesthetics. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to restore and maintain terrazzo floors.
01. Initial Maintenance: Thorough Wax Sealing- Terrazzo’s porous cement base should be sealed with a non-yellowing wax.
- For the first few months, mop the floor daily to remove minerals.
- After deep cleaning, reapply wax if necessary.
02. Daily Cleaning: Broom & Vacuum
- Use a broom or an oil-free treated mop to remove dust.
- Polish with a synthetic fiber pad (avoid steel wool).
03. Regular Cleaning: Wet Mopping & Brushing
- Pre-wet the floor with clean water.
- Use a mild detergent and a mop or vacuum suction device.
- Polish using synthetic sealing wax recommended by the terrazzo tile supplier.
04. Periodic Maintenance: Synthetic Polishing
- Apply a synthetic polishing agent for exterior terrazzo tiles.
- With proper care, waxing can last several years and be extended to three years or more.
- If terrazzo is severely damaged, consider re-sealing with wax or installing a new layer.
Important Maintenance Reminders
❌ Avoid These Common Mistakes:
- Do not use steel wool – It can scratch the surface and cause discoloration.
-
Avoid alkaline cleaners – They can corrode terrazzo and cause peeling. -
Ensure proper waxing – Unsealed floors can be damaged by acidic cleaning agents (pH below 6.5). -
Protect the floor from heavy equipment – Use suitable casters to prevent scratches.
✅ Additional Tips for Longevity:
- Daily dust removal using mops and vacuum cleaners.
- Place dust-removal mats at entrances to trap sand and debris before they scratch the surface.
- Immediate stain removal is crucial! Stains from oil, tea, coffee, cola, or ink can seep into the stone and cause permanent discoloration.
- No protective agent offers 100% long-term protection, so quick cleanup is essential.
