1. Characteristics of Traditional Mosaic

Traditional Dark Emperador Marble Mosaic

Early Dark Emperador Marble mosaic referred to ceramic granular building materials made from kaolin, fired at high temperatures. These mosaics had the following characteristics:

• Shapes & Sizes: Small squares or hexagons, with a uniform thickness of 0.5 cm and a length of 1 cm or 2 cm.
• Color Variations:
  • Mostly white and black.
  • Dark green and dark red were used less frequently.
  • Blue was rare.
• Material Properties:
  • Brittle, hard, and high-density.
  • Highly wear-resistant.
  • Smooth front surface and rough back surface for better bonding.
• Functional Features:
  • Dirt-resistant, preventing infiltration into the surface.
  • Acid and alkali resistant, making it ideal for bathroom floors, stair steps, and public spaces.

1. Bonding Method of Traditional Dark Emperador Marble Mosaic

The traditional bonding method differs significantly from the modern back-net technique:

Traditional Sheet Material Bonding:

• The mosaic sheets were pasted on the front (smooth) surface of the tiles.
• Thick kraft paper was used as the sheet backing.
• The bonding material was a water-based glue with moderate adhesive strength.
• Standard sheet size: 30 cm × 30 cm.

Advantage Over Modern Back-Net Method:

• Since the mosaic back surface (rough side) bonded directly with cement, better adhesion was achieved.
• The gaps between particles were uniform, ensuring a consistent decorative effect.
