Chairman and Engineer of the Natural Stone and Cream Limestone Paving Slab Industry Association

Palestine, traditionally known for its natural crude oil extraction industry, is now seeing the cream limestone paving slab and natural stone industry emerge as a significant economic sector. The warm sandstone from the region is particularly famous. The stone industry contributes approximately 5% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) and provides employment opportunities for around 15,000 to 20,000 people, including those in related industries.

In the West Bank, a relatively small geographic area, there are about 600 companies engaged in stone mining, with 350 quarries located in Jenin, Nablus, Ramallah, Bethlehem (Belen), and Galilee.

Although the stone industry has experienced significant growth in recent decades, it remains one of the oldest industries in the region. The historical significance of Palestinian stone is evident in sacred landmarks such as:

  • Al-Aqsa Mosque, built primarily from stone
  • The Dome of the Rock (Mount of the Rock)
  • The Church of the Holy Sepulchre (Resurrection/Easter Church)
  • The Tomb of Abraham in Galilee
  • Various ancient buildings in the Old City

These historical sites highlight not only Palestine’s deep-rooted architectural, cultural, and traditional heritage but also the integration of religious beliefs into stone-built structures, drawing visitors from all over the world.

In the 10th century AD, the renowned geographer Al-Maqdisi, originally from Jerusalem, visited the Iranian city of Shiraz and discussed Palestinian architects and craftsmen. He documented their expertise in natural stone design and construction techniques. This historical account reinforces the Palestinian stone industry’s crucial influence during that period, demonstrating its role in advancing stonework technology and craftsmanship, even beyond Palestine’s borders.
