What is Efflorescence?

Efflorescence is a white crystalline residue that forms when water carries alkali, salts, and other minerals from within the stone or binding material to the surface. As the water evaporates, these substances are left behind, creating a visible deposit.

Preventive Measures

1. Design Considerations

• The designer should account for the possibility of efflorescence in the planning stage.
• Preventing water infiltration is key to avoiding efflorescence.
• A waterproof layer should be applied on surfaces exposed to water, such as walls and pools. Options include:
  • Waterproof paint
  • Waterproof coiled material
  • Cement mortar mixed with 5% waterproofing agent
• The waterproofing method should be selected based on actual site conditions.

2. Stone Waterproofing Before Construction

• The black sandstone slate should be waterproofed before installation.
• Apply a waterproof back coating agent on all six sides of the stone for full protection.

Efflorescence Cleaning

• If efflorescence occurs, use a stone efflorescence cleaning agent to remove deposits.
• However, cleaning may not completely eliminate the issue, making preventive measures the best approach.
