Nick Misani and the Art of Fauxsaics

1. About the Designer

Nick Misani is a New York-based designer known for his intricate and ultra-realistic digital mosaic artworks. His series, Fauxsaics, is a collection of typographic black-and-white marble mosaic patterns that pay homage to traditional mosaic craftsmanship.

2. The Art of Fauxsaics

Although these designs resemble the ornate floors seen in Wes Anderson films, they are entirely digital creations made on a computer. Similar to traditional mosaic tile laying, the digital process also comes with its own set of technical limitations and challenges.

3. A Tribute to Global Travel

Misani’s Fauxsaics series is a tribute to his travels around the world. Each piece is uniquely designed with fonts and colors inspired by different cities and communities.

  • San Diego: Features a layout of pink palm trees, reminiscent of California’s hazy sunsets.
  • London: Composed of neatly arranged black and white squares, reflecting the city’s structured aesthetic.
  • Santo Domingo: Designed with red and gray fan-like patterns, capturing the vibrancy of the Dominican capital.

4. Inspiration and Craftsmanship

Misani has long been fascinated by typography, interior design, and decorative arts. His work reflects the intersection of these three fields, particularly through his use of black-and-white marble mosaic splicing techniques.

Beyond digital art, this classic craft has also been adapted for use in store decor and product packaging. Despite being limited to black and white, these designs maintain a sense of depth, elegance, and intricate variation.
