The traditional method of bearing loads relies on the thickness of the impervious wall. Inspired by this, the project developed a hollow interlocking structural wall system to enhance thermal insulation efficiency. This system also utilizes the wall cavity for service needs, reducing overall material consumption by 30%.
All elements of the project are constructed using 600x300 gray sandstone slabs, including basement laminates, retaining walls, lintels, doors and window jambs, skylights, stairs, and screens. The sandstone is sourced either from quarries or through on-site excavation.
Private homes are arranged around a narrow courtyard, with even narrower slits in certain areas. By carefully distributing voids and spaces, the design mimics local traditional houses, effectively shielding interiors from the intense summer heat. Large glass windows at the front and rear are shaded by deeply overhanging, hand-cut 600x300 gray sandstone slab screens, ensuring both light regulation and privacy.
The local quarry, located a 45-minute drive from the site, was requested by the architect to revive the traditional "splitting" masonry technique instead of using modern machine-intensive hacksaw extraction. This method restores the natural grain of the 600x300 gray sandstone slabs, preserving the warmth and authenticity lost in industrial production. The traditional "splitting" technique also imparts a natural and tactile quality to the stone, enhancing the overall aesthetic and feel of the project.
