When a Chinese restaurant opens inside an international hotel, the floor has to tell a story. For this project, Ji Yuan Stone produced a full waterjet marble floor in the shape of a traditional Chinese folding fan — laid in Volakas White Marble from Greece with fan ribs and accents in Valencia Cream Marble. Every piece was cut by waterjet, dry-laid in the factory for approval, then packed for the hotel site.

The Design: A Chinese Fan in Stone

The folding fan (扇子) is one of the most recognizable symbols of Chinese culture — elegance, scholarship, and welcome. Translating it into a marble floor meant solving a geometry problem: dozens of triangular fan ribs radiating from a pivot point, each one a separate waterjet-cut piece, set into a field of white marble tiles with gold triangular inlays extending the pattern across the whole dining area.

The CAD layout (see project drawing below) mapped every single piece — each triangle numbered for installation. The fan motif repeats three times across the floor, with the gold inlay pattern flowing between them so the entire restaurant reads as one composition.

Two Marbles, One Composition

Volakas White Marble (Greece). The white ground of the floor. Quarried in Greece, Volakas White has a soft white background with light grey and beige veining — bright enough to keep a restaurant interior luminous, with enough movement to feel like natural stone rather than a plain surface. It forms the field tiles and the negative space around the fan motif.

Valencia Cream Marble. The golden accent. Its honey-gold base color gives the fan ribs, the triangular inlays, and the radiating pattern their warmth and contrast against the white field. Without this gold, the fan would be a line drawing; with it, the floor glows.

The white-and-gold pairing is a deliberate choice for hospitality: white for cleanliness and light, gold for prosperity and welcome — exactly the message a Chinese restaurant in a foreign hotel wants to send.

Waterjet Cutting and Factory Dry-Lay

Every triangular piece in the fan was cut on CNC waterjet from the designer's CAD files. Waterjet is the only practical method for this kind of work: the fan ribs change angle piece by piece, and each triangle must meet its neighbors with hairline joints. A deviation of even a millimeter would show as a visible step in the radiating pattern.

Before packing, the entire floor was dry-laid in the factory — the full composition assembled on the factory floor exactly as it will be installed, photographed from above and at ground level, and checked piece by piece. This dry-lay is standard practice on Ji Yuan Stone's waterjet projects: it catches any cutting error before the stone ships, not after it arrives on site.
